A new website has been created to give people a chance to comment on tax valuations in Halifax County, its creator said today.

The website, run by Citizens Against Tax Discrimination, is located at http://halifaxtaxes.com.

Mike Davis, a developer, said the idea for the website and group has been in the works for the last three months. "More and more people I talk to have the same problem," he said. "This will give people a say in how their taxes are evaluated."

Davis recently had an appeal turned down by the county commissioners. "When I presented my case to the county commissioners, my commercial property was valued twice as much as my neighbor," he said. "They support the tax assessor. They don't take the taxpayers into consideration when they make a decision."

Davis said he has already received support for his cause and the website. "They agree with what I'm doing. I'm glad they finally have a voice rather than the elected officials."

Davis plans a meeting to discuss options on Nov. 18. A time and place has not been set but if people send Davis their name, phone number and address to PO Box 280, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, he will send them a notice once the time and place have been determined. "We hope to gain fairness in taxation for everyone in the county instead of letting the county shove them down your throat."

Davis said the website will be updated weekly.
