The man who killed an intruder knew his attacker, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office is repoting.
Major Bruce Temple said in a press release investigation revealed Marcell Alston hadn't seen the man for several years.
Sheriff's Office investigators confirmed the identity of the suspect as Carlton Burgess, 61, from Lumberton, N.J.
Burgess held a domestic grudge with Alston since 1988 and the issues serve as an apparent motive in the attack, Temple said.
This morning law enforcement responded to 911 calls from a residence in the 5000 block of Highway 301 in Halifax.
A resident reported that a man knocked on his door and attacked the resident when the door was opened. The suspect assaulted the victim, striking the victim in the head. At some point during the attack, the suspect shot the victim in the lower back area.
The victim managed to get to his own firearm and shot the suspect in the upper torso. The suspect was deceased upon deputies' arrival. The victim was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center.
The investigation will continue.
