A disabled person's assistant has been charged with allegedly taking a cell phone out in his name and leaving him with a bill just shy of $1,000.

The initial report was taken in October, according to Detective J. Puhak of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Initially investigated by Deputy Danny Radford and former Detective D. Pilgreen, who is now a school resource officer, the case was given to Puhak in March.

Through the issuance of a court ordered subpoena, Puhak was able to obtain a call log from the illegally obtained phone.

Through calling numbers on the phone records and interviews with the disabled victim, Puhak was able to obtain a suspect — Shemeka Teonna Scott, 28, of the Garysburg and Emporia. She had been the man's personal aid.

Through the evidence discovered, warrants were obtained on Scott shortly after the case was assigned to Puhak.

Through the help of the Emporia Police Department, Scott was apprehended Thursday. She was extradited to Halifax County where she faces charges of exploitation of a disabled person, felony obtaining property by false pretense, misdemeanor larceny of the phone and possession of stolen goods.

She was jailed on $5,000 bond and has a June 29 court date.
