The Halifax County Board of Elections will be going through provisional and write-in ballots today to determine the winner in the mayors race in the town of Halifax.
Board of Elections Director Kristen Scott said this morning the board will have most likely have an answer by late today or Thursday morning.
That incumbent mayor Gerald Wright only received 41 percent of the votes does not necessarily mean he won't get the mayor's position, Scott said. “Sometimes voters will circle 'write-in' and do not write a candidate's name.”
Unofficial results show 58.82 percent of the ballots cast in the mayor's election were write-ins. The process today will involve seeing if any names were written in.
That process will also apply to the town board race in which 47.97 percent of the votes cast were write-ins.
Fueling the high write-in percentage were people who were undecided about running and the board of elections decision to not extend the filing deadline, sources familiar with town politics said.
Scott said there were no people interested in running the board decided extending the filing period would cost the town a little bit more money.
