The city should have all Hurricane Irene cleanup expenses reimbursed by Thursday, Finance Director MeLinda Hite told council tonight.
The city also received its money for repairs to damages it sustained during the August 27 storm.
The city incurred total expenses of $983,327. It has received $819,238 of the money and is expected to receive the remainder from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Thursday, Hite told council at its work session.
FEMA reimbursed the city $134,901 for damages it received during the storm, Hite said. “We’re happy to report all claims are settled. We’re still making repairs but have settled the claims.”
Mayor Emery Doughtie was pleased with the report. “On behalf of the community, I want to thank everyone for getting the money back. We had to have a system in place and people stepped up. If they didn’t know something, we had people to find out and that’s why we’re getting the money back.”
In another matter tonight, council recognized the retirement of Revenue/Tax Collector Phyllis Hasty. Her retirement, after 22 years of service, will be effective April 30.
Hasty joined the city in 1990 as a tax clerk and was promoted to assistant tax collector a year later. In 1999 she was named revenue/tax collector.
Lori Jones, currently a payroll technician, will take Hasty’s job at the end of the month.
