A city code enforcement officer was beaten and bitten by a dog as he was investigating a complaint on Roanoke Avenue Tuesday morning.
Walter Johnson, the city’s safety director and code enforcement officer, was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Police this morning declined to discuss the extent of his injuries but did say William Gilbert Roundtree III, 48, of 2100 Roanoke Avenue, was arrested.
Johnson was on his way to investigate another matter when he stopped to check on a problem dealing with the junk ordinance at Roundtree’s residence.
Roundtree, according to Captain Andy Jackson, of the police department, communicated threats to Johnson and allegedly attacked him. Roundtree’s dog also bit Johnson.
The injuries were severe enough to send Johnson to the hospital.
Roundtree was charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury, communicating threats, criminal damage to property, a city ordinance ticket for an animal violation and simple physical assault.
The assault occurred shortly after 11:15 a.m. Roundtree was jailed on $10,000 secured bond and has a May 30 court date.
