The Halifax County Horse Council always has a benefit show.
This year’s show, set for Saturday at the Halifax Horse and Livestock Complex, is for one of its own members.
The show, which begins with registration at 5 p.m., will be held for Chris Dilday, a council member who has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
“We always have a benefit fun show,” said Jennifer Norton, a member and volunteer. “We find someone who is in need and donate all the money to them.”
This year the council decided to donate to Dilday, who works at Lake Country Animal Hospital. She lost her husband in the spring just as she found out her diagnosis. “Because she is a member, we decided she should be the recipient,” Norton said. “She is in the middle of her treatment. Spirit-wise, she is really good. Anyone going through radiation is worn down.”
For Norton, a member of the council for four years, there was no question about helping out in this event. “Anything with the kids, riding horses is very therapeutic. My sister passed away two years ago. Therapeutic-wise, that I can help out and that it involves horses is a no-brainer.”
The event will be nothing but fun, Norton says, featuring events such as horseback egg and spoon race, Texas barrel and regular barrel events and horseback basketball shooting. “It’s comical and will be a fun day.”
There is no admission fee for the events, which begin at 5:30 p.m. at the complex off Highway 903. “The only way we’re making money is through the concession stand.”
There will be snow cones, hot dogs, cotton candy, nachos, chips and drinks. “Anyone riding in the event, that’s where we make the money.”
A Chinese auction is also planned.
There will be four divisions to compete in: Novice, 12 and under; 13 to 17; 18 and older.
There are 14 events at $5 per rider or $50 for all events. Proper riding attire and helmets are required for riders. Negative Coggins is required.
