The Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District reported this morning a wastewater spill of an estimated 8,400 gallons Tuesday from the wastewater collection system, Manhole 54, sub-basin A, located at Fourth and Laurel Streets.
In the mandatory reporting of this spill, district CEO Dan Brown the spill began at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and ended at 1 a.m. the following day.
The district reported a second wastewater spill of an estimated 7,200 gallons from the wastewater collection system, Manhole 46, sub-basin A, located at West Third Street and Starke Drive.
This spill began at 8 p.m. on Tuesday and ended at 8 a.m. the following day.
Brown said untreated wastewater diluted by heavy rains spilled into the waters of the state tributary to the Roanoke River in the Roanoke River Basin when inflow into the sewer system from rainwater runoff exceeded the carrying capacity of the pipes. Preparation is being made for all known repairs necessary to reduce the source of inflow to return the pipe system to service and minimize further discharge.
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality was notified of the event on Thursday and is reviewing the matter.
