The Exchange Company in Becker Village Mall has expanded the charities it seeks to help through the consignment shop.
Starting with Angel’s Closet after its reopening last month under the mall’s control, proceeds from sales will also be split between the Halifax County Boys and Girls Club and the Bethlehem Pantry run by First United Methodist Church.
The decision to expand the charities that will be helped by the consignment store came after Angel’s Closet Director Gilbert Portela discussed the matter with his board. “The board felt it was important to get behind all three,” mall owner Ellen Heaton said this week. “All three have been struggling and we have a community in need in tough economic times. I think it was a great gesture.”

The store has undergone some changes since its grand opening last month, Heaton said. Yvonne Hoffman helped change the layout of the store. “Yvonne Hoffman worked hard. It looks like something you want to walk in and see what’s going on.”
Heaton sees the shop as a winning situation for all — from the charities being helped to the discount on often new or lightly used clothing customers will see. “I had a lady come in today and she bought a pair of name brand pants and a top. I sold a men’s leather jacket for $35.”
While the shop is doing well, Heaton said, “My biggest challenge is I need volunteers.”
The volunteers are needed to staff the shop when Heaton can’t be there and she encourages civic organizations to volunteer time. “It would be great for people who just want to get out of the house for a while.”
