A Roanoke Rapids man found guilty of beating his former girlfriend and the man who tried to intervene has appealed the sentence made in the case last Thursday.

A Halifax County jury found Michael Scott Hamilton, 32, guilty of burglary and two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter, according to court records.

For the burglary count he was sentenced to 84 to 113 months in prison. He received 33 to 52 months in prison for each of the attempted voluntary manslaughter counts, which will run back to back.

North Carolina Department of Public Safety records show Hamilton was admitted to Craven Correction Institution to begin serving his sentence.

The assault occurred the evening of May 4 on Pinewood Road and was the apparent result of a domestic dispute between Hamilton and his former girlfriend.
