The Halifax County Finance Department was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

The department was awarded the certificate by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30 of last year.

This marks the 19th straight year it has received the award.

The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The county received notification of the award last month and it was presented to Finance Director Mary Duncan at Monday’s board of commissioners meeting.

“This is a team effort,” Duncan told the board after receiving the certificate from Jeff McCauley, the CFO for the Greenville Utilities Commission and a representative of the GFOA.

Board Chair Vernon Bryant told Duncan and members of the department, “On behalf of the board, we do appreciate all your hard work.”

County Manager Tony Brown said, “Thank you for what you do. I know they’re hard at work and doing the best they can. They’re helping you keep taxes low.”

Said McCauley: “There’s a lot of heavy lifting that goes on behind the scenes.”
