Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening recognized the promotions of two police officers.

Gerald Morris has been promoted from police officer III to master officer and Chris Babb has been promoted from master officer to investigator.

Chief Chuck Hasty said following the meeting the master officer rank recognizes more than 900 hours of training and reflects the work ethic of the officers.

Morris is one of the department's dog handlers.

“They are both good guys,” Hasty said of Morris and Babb. “They're family men and very dedicated. They are good with people.”

Mayor Emery Doughtie said during the meeting, “We appreciate what you do and your commitment.”

In other matters this evening council:

• Approved the temporary closure of Jarman and Seventh streets for the Main Street Roanoke Rapids Seafood and Shag Festival set for June 5 between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. The festival will take place at Centennial Park and in the parking lot of the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall.

• Approved a $25,000 budget amendment to cover the cost of the demolition of 1026 Roanoke Avenue, the site of the former Roanoke Restaurant.

The $25,000 will come from the city's vehicle tax revenue, City Manager Joseph Scherer.

The city has received two bids, one for $45,000 and another for $48,000. The money appropriated this evening adds to the $24,000 already in the demolition budget.
