On March 11, stylist Suzanne Robinson Holt will hold a drawing to determine the winner of her gift basket.

While the winner will walk away with a basket containing more than $500 in an assortment of styling products and other items, the real winner may just be the wife of a Roanoke Rapids police officer who remains critically ill.

Holt decided to make the basket as a way to help Angie Benthall, who is a client of Holt's at Cut-N-Up on Becker Drive. “I have two small children and she has two small children. I have a huge heart and Angie is one of the sweetest people I know. I knew her husband (Jonathan) was going to be out of work.”

Starting out as a basket solely made up of styling products, as word spread of what Holt was doing, the prizes contained in the basket began to swell. “So many people offered to help.”

Included in the basket is a 30-ounce RTIC tumbler, which Shannon Golden will monogram for free; a bracelet with free monogramming; a $35 facial gift card; Red Lobster gift card worth $25; a $30 shellac gift card; a $100 gas card; a $50 Roanoke Valley Fresh Mart gift card; a $150 photo session from Photos By Kelly; a $40 Simply Divine Cakes gift card; a $65 airbrush make-up and formal hairstyle gift card and many beauty products.

A single ticket costs $5 and five tickets can be purchased for $20 at Cut-N-Up; Old Farm Road Storage and Shannon Golden Designs on Roanoke Avenue.

Amy Powell Kelly is also selling tickets and those interested in buying from her may contact her via Facebook.

Meanwhile, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said a benefit stew sale sponsored by Calvary and Victory Baptist churches was an overwhelming success Saturday and will help the Benthall family with traveling and medical expenses.

“It went great,” Hasty said. “We sold all the stew (around 600 quarts). It was a complete success.”
