Gaston Fire Rescue and EMS said in an update earlier today the man, identified by friends as Juan Alberto Saravia Parada, fell into the river while fishing at the Tail Race near the Roanoke Rapids Dam.

First responders put in five boats this morning to search for the man and were using sonar.

Those searching for the 35-year-old man include Gaston, Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, Northampton County Emergency Management, the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, Gaston Police Department and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Land search operations were also conducted today.

There was no one at the Gaston boat landing this afternoon immediately available to discuss the matter.

Parada was wearing pants and a black coat, friends said in messages to rrspin this afternoon.
