A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Sunday with statutory rape of a minor following an investigation that began Friday with a report of locating a juvenile who had been reported missing out of Warren County.

Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said during the initial call Friday, Deputy G. Knight contacted Detective G. Keel about possible inappropriate contact with a minor.

Knight and Keel worked on developing probable cause for a search warrant and arrest warrant for Jared Jeffers, 24.

The search warrant was executed Sunday at a Roanoke Rapids residence where the juvenile had been located.

Jeffers was taken into custody and later served with the outstanding warrant for statutory rape of a minor.

He remains in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond and has a June 10 district court date.

The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Keel at 252-645-9625 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
