The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Roanoke Rapids man was charged Saturday with possession of 17.5 grams of cocaine, as well as 32 pills believed to be a mixture of Xanax and Clonazepam.

Major Anzell Harris said Community Action Team Sergeant D. Harrison conducted a traffic stop on a man, later identified as 28-year-old Maryo Plum, on I-95. The stop was initiated after the sergeant allegedly observed Plum making movements consistent with concealing items inside the vehicle before coming to a stop.

Plum was asked to exit the vehicle ahead of a canine search after deputies detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search of Plum resulted in the discovery of a medicine bottle concealed in his groin area, which contained the cocaine and pills. Deputies also searched the vehicle, locating marijuana and a digital scale.

Plum was arrested and charged with:

Possession of a Schedule II controlled substance

Maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance

Possession of marijuana

Two counts of simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance

Possession of drug paraphernalia

Failure to maintain lane control

Plum was denied bail and is scheduled for a district court appearance this Wednesday.
