The Roanoke Rapids Police Department is investigating an apparent instance of bullying within the Roanoke Rapids High School football program as a criminal matter, Chief Lawrence Wiggins said this afternoon.

“Consistent with criminal matters occurring on school grounds, the RRPD is working closely with the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District, where appropriate, to swiftly bring this matter to a resolution,” he said. “The RRPD is committed to discovering and obtaining the truth in reference to what occurred on September 24, 2026, in or around the RRHS football team locker room.”

As of now, no charges have been filed against any student over the age of 18, and no petitions have been sought on any student who is a juvenile. “This is an active and ongoing investigation,” he said.

On Thursday, RRPD officers responded to ECU North Hospital in response to a report of a juvenile being injured as a result of bullying at Roanoke Rapids High School. The juvenile victim is a member of the RRHS football team.

At the time, Chief Wiggins said an RRPD officer was on school grounds observing football practice. Shortly after practice ended, the juvenile victim emerged from the building in pain, suffering from a visible injury to one of his hands. The officer called for EMS to respond to the high school.
