The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three people in connection with a September 27 shooting death that occurred at a housing complex on McDowell Road in the Scotland Neck area, according to Sheriff Tyree Davis.

The arrests of Denzel McDaniel, Adam Dickens, and Rashawn Smith were made with assistance from the HCSO Special Response Team, the Scotland Neck Police Department, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force based in the Raleigh-Durham area, Davis said.

Later on the day of the shooting death of the 37-year-old victim, Dickens and McDaniel were arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Both were denied bail. Search warrants tied to those cases were executed at two locations by the HCSO SRT, the SNPD, and the NCSO SRT.

Throughout the following week, the investigation continued with assistance from the FBI and the Scotland Neck Police Department.

As the investigation progressed, detectives developed probable cause to obtain arrest warrants for Smith, Dickens, and McDaniel. The arrest warrants specifically tied to the shooting death were not immediately on file in electronic court records.

On October 2, arrest warrants were obtained for:

McDaniel: Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and accessory after the fact

Dickens: Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and accessory after the fact

Smith: Second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder

This morning, following extensive surveillance, agents and deputies developed probable cause to believe Smith was hiding at his residence and enlisted the help of FBI SWAT to aid in his capture.

Davis said all three have now been served with their outstanding warrants related to the homicide and have been remanded to the Halifax County Detention Center, where they were denied bail. They have October 21 court dates.

“The sheriff’s office recognizes the importance of strong partnerships among local, regional, and federal law enforcement agencies,” Davis said. “The collaborative efforts of the Halifax County Drug and Gang Task Force, Nash County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Scotland Neck Police Department, FBI Raleigh-Durham Safe Streets Task Force, and FBI SWAT played an important role in the investigation and apprehension of the suspects.”

Davis added, “The sheriff’s office extends its appreciation to all participating agencies and personnel for their continued commitment to the safety and security of Halifax County.”
