A 26-year-old Roanoke Rapids man was fatally shot and his 93-year-old grandmother sustained head trauma following a burglary late Saturday night in the 2000 block of Everette’s School Road.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office identified the shooting victim as Tyquan Shaquell Moody.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said this morning there is the appearance the break-in was a targeted crime. Personal items were taken from the victim during the crime, which was reported shortly after 11:45 p.m.

In a statement this morning Hall said deputies found a 93-year-old woman who had been assaulted and also reported her grandson had been shot. It is unclear how the woman was assaulted, he said.

Deputies located Moody in another room deceased from a gunshot wound.

The grandmother was taken to Vidant North for treatment of head trauma. Hall said as of early this morning the woman was reported to be in stable condition.

Hall said in the statement the motive of the crime appears to be a robbery attempt.
