For the second year in a row, a Roanoke Rapids High School senior has been named a Goodnight Scholar.

Jonathan Garcia plans to major in electrical engineering at North Carolina State University.

The Goodnight Scholars Program, funded by a gift from Dr. Jim and Ann Goodnight, began with 25 scholars in 2008.

Since then, it has grown into a comprehensive student development program designed to develop scholars into leaders within the STEM and or education fields.

"I'm excited about this opportunity and what it will mean for my future. When I told my Mom, she screamed with excitement," Garcia said.

The value of the scholarship is $21,000 and is renewable for up to four years.

In addition to the scholarship, Goodnight Scholars have access to an assortment of developmental programming focused on their professional and personal growth.

Last year's recipient for the class of 2020 was Eric Phan.
