Northampton County Sheriff's Office personnel attended the 2021 North Carolina Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony in Winston-Salem Thursday to honor one of their fallen deputies.

Makeem Brooks died November 14 of 2019 after he crashed his vehicle while responding to a call.

The officers were joined by the fallen deputy’s family members, including his mother and sister.

Brooks had been employed with the sheriff’s office for about six months and received his law enforcement training from Nash Community College.

Sheriff Jack Smith said at the time Brooks, who was 27, “was a very warm-hearted person. He was very kind and respectful, the kind of person who says ‘yes sir,’ and ‘no sir.’

“Many of us know and have been around long enough to know things like this happen from time to time. He was a bright young deputy with a promising future ahead of him.”

Northampton County Sheriff’s Office staff pictured with members of the late deputy’s family are Sergeant Rayquan Horton, Deputy Mitchell Deloatch, and Deputy Phyliss King.
