New positive cases of COVID-19 this week increased from last week and the Halifax County Health Department today added one new death related to the virus.

The health department reported 173 new positive cases which brings the total since March of last year to 7,715. There have been 133 deaths related to COVID-19 in the county.

There have been 7,274 patients who have recovered and there are 254 current cases.

“There's a substantial spike — by 72 — in positive cases compared to last week,” health department Director Bruce Robistow said this afternoon. “Our percent positive, however, did decline by half a percentage point. Regretfully, we have added one more death in Halifax County related to COVID-19.”

Notable in today’s report, the health director said, is that while the number of new positive cases increased substantially, the percent positives went down. “This is due to the fact there is an increased volume of actual tests being performed. One reason is that several employers are requiring weekly testing for unvaccinated employees. Although across the state and the nation there is a steady decline in cases and hospitalizations our number of positive cases remain a concern.”

Robistow said: “Considering the statewide and nationwide downward trend, this is a great opportunity to get vaccinated and ensure a fun and safe holiday season.”
