A Weldon woman is tentatively scheduled for a February 14 court appearance in Halifax County to face charges in a December 22 crash which claimed the life of her 10-year-old son.

Trooper J.T. Keeter of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol has charged Jewel Sykes, 36, with DWI, careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked, fail to maintain lane control, improper child restraint, felony death by motor vehicle and two counts of child abuse.

Keeter said the driving while license revoked charge was based on a previous DWI.

Keeter declined to give the name of the 10-year-old as well as a 7-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy who were backseat passengers. Those two children were airlifted to Greenville and have since been released.

Sykes was traveling north on Highway 301 in the Halifax area near the department of social services shortly before 7 p.m. when she went off the road to the right and collided with a phone box and then a driveway culvert. The vehicle then overturned.

The 10-year-old was a right front seat passenger. He was transported to Vidant North Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
