The Halifax County Sheriff Office bought toys and other items today as part of its Benefiting the Children of Halifax County program.

The items purchased at Walmart will be distributed to seven elementary schools in the county, Sheriff Wes Tripp said.

The money used to purchase the items for boys and girls came from different organizations and partners, Chief Deputy Scott Hall said.

Tripp said the $9,000 included a $1,000 grant from Walmart and sizeable donations from First Media Radio and Price Gregory.

With donations made as sheriff's office staff were shopping, a total of $9,265 was spent on toys and clothes.

The next Benefiting the Children event will be the annual seafood festival in April in which proceeds will be used for the sheriff’s Junior Deputy Camp. Tripp said he would like to see at least 100 children participate in the free camp.
