Candidate-filing for the 2022 statewide primary and rescheduled municipal elections will resume at 8 a.m. February 24 and end at noon March 4. The primary is scheduled for May 17.

Candidates who filed before the suspension do not need to refile if they wish to run for the same office. 

However, those candidates may withdraw their candidacy during the new filing period and instead file for any other office in which they are eligible. 

The deadline to withdraw is the close business on March 1.

Depending on the office sought, candidates will file their Notice of Candidacy with either the local county board of elections or the State Board of Elections. 

Candidates for the following offices will file with the State Board: 

U.S. Senate

U.S. House of Representatives

N.C. Supreme Court Justice

Judge of the N.C. Court of Appeals

Superior Court Judge

District Court Judge

District Attorney

Candidates filing with the state board will file at the Governor James G. Martin Building, 4381 Trinity Road, Raleigh, located on the N.C. State Fairgrounds. 

Candidates, guests, and members of the media should enter the fairgrounds through Gate 9 on Trinity Road. 

Candidates filing with the state board, the following hours apply: From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all business days during the filing period, except for Friday, March 4, when filing is open from 8 a.m. to noon. 

Candidates for the following offices will file with county board of elections: 

N.C. Senate

N.C. House of Representatives

All county and municipal offices

Candidates filing with Halifax County Board of Elections will file at the Old Commissioners Building, 2 North King Street in Halifax located next to the Historic Courthouse. 

Candidates filing with Halifax County Board of Elections, the following hours apply: February 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Candidate filing will resume during normal business hours with the exception of Friday, March 4, when filing will close at noon. 

Filing fees are required for all offices, unless a candidate has submitted a valid petition in lieu of paying a filing fee, and the petition has been certified.

Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 13 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

Saturday, May 14 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Halifax County residents who are not registered to vote may register and vote during the one-stop voting period. 

Residents who are registering to vote during the one-stop voting period must provide a current valid ID as proof of residency. The ID must show your name and current residential address. The following types of ID are acceptable: a government document — passport, driver’s license, etc. — utility bill, paycheck or a bank statement.
