A Roanoke Rapids man was arrested today in the February 17 shooting death of a 19-year-old in Weldon.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said detectives and narcotics agents took Tremaine Devon Simmons into custody around 2 p.m.

He is charged with murder in the shooting death of Ja’eid Watson.

Hall said the fatal shooting was the result of an ongoing feud between the 26-year-old Simmons and the victim. Hall declined to elaborate on the nature of the dispute.

Simmons in March had been charged as an accessory in the case. Hall said additional evidence collected led to today’s murder charge. He said the court system will address the accessory charge.

The shooting occurred in the 900 block of Sycamore Street, the sheriff’s office said at the time.

Watson sustained multiple gunshot wounds as he was standing outside in the roadway around 10:30 a.m. the day of the shooting.

Hall said the case remains under investigation.

Simmons was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a June 15 court date.
