On Friday the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department and the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce join together — the fire department holding its Fire Safety Fair and the chamber holding its Avenue Beat concert series.

The safety fair, the first in two years since the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at station 1 on Roanoke Avenue, Centennial Park and the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall which will host vendors.

The Avenue Beat series, in which Tanglewood will be the headliners, will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Centennial Park.

“We had a lot of positive feedback,” from the past fairs, fire department Chief Jason Patrick said.

The fair will include face-painting, a bounce house, Sparky the Fire Dog, miniature fire truck rides as well as the fire safety house.

While the fair serves as a way to get fire safety information out to the public, Deputy Chief Wes Hux said, “Part of our ISO rating is community outreach. Getting our message out is one of the things we’re graded on.”

The fire department will also be handing out bags with school supplies including notebook paper, pens, pencils, and glue sticks. The fire department will be handing out tickets for book bag drawings.

Hux said sponsors include GW Hux Insurance, Steve’s Tire, Saponi Land and Timber, Clearwater Pools, Reser’s, Wrenn’s Screen Printing, Carolina Chips, WestRock, New Testament Church, Walmart, Arthur and Nicholson, Thomas Fleming, Davie Fire Department, Coca-Cola, and George Collins — a Little Debbie distributor.

Meanwhile the chamber is gearing up for the Avenue Beat performance of Tanglewood, a duo which performs Americana music.

The group has shared the stage with or opened for Dan Tyminski, Lee Greenwood, Jack Lawrence of the Doc Watson band, Jim Avett of the Avett Brothers, and Tommy Edwards  as well as more.

Food trucks will be on site for meal and beverage purchases.
