Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a shooting which occurred Tuesday afternoon on Rebecca Street which also led to the filing of drug charges.
The shooting victim, 36-year-old Rashard Jones, who sustained multiple gunshots to his midsection, was listed in stable condition after he was airlifted to a medical facility, Chief Bobby Martin said.
Shortly before 2:15 p.m.Tuesday officers responded to Rebecca Street after shots were fired and people observed someone leaving the area in a white sedan which was being driven at a high rate of speed.
Officers learned the driver of the vehicle had dropped off Jones at ECU North and then left.
Officers talked with Jones. The vehicle was located on Rebecca Street and the driver, identified as Maryo Plum, was detained for questioning.
After checking Plum and the vehicle, 10 grams of cocaine, five Xanax pills, 11 Clonazepam pills and two Oxycodone pills were located. Officers also located a Micro Draco 7.62 by 39 mm weapon and a Glock 19 9mm.
Plum, 25, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with possession of cocaine, simple possession of schedule II, and simple possession of scheduled IV. He received a $1,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in district court today.
Martin said the shooting remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
