A joint investigation led by the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in numerous charges against four people in what Captain Patrick Jacobs described as a multi-jurisdiction catalytic converter theft ring.

The cases involve 11 victims, 25 catalytic converter thefts, and the breaking and entering of a garage in which numerous tools were stolen.

Jacobs said Sergeant J. Barmer began working in conjunction with Detective B. Turner of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office last month and the two connected the crimes to the same group of people.

The investigators also connected the cases with neighboring agencies including the sheriff’s offices of Halifax and Hertford and the police departments of Ahoskie, Windsor, Rich Square and Woodland.

“This was an outstanding investigative effort by Sergeant J. Barmer along with the collaborative resources of numerous agencies working together for a common investigative goal,” Sheriff Jack Smith said. “It is a great asset and positive result when law enforcement agencies are able to communicate and jointly work together to solve crimes that impact citizens throughout multiple counties.”

A roundup of those wanted in the ring began Wednesday and included DMV’s license and theft bureau, the Special Operations Intelligence Unit with Adult Corrections, the Hertford and Bertie sheriff’s offices and the Jackson Police Department, along with the aforementioned police agencies, Jacobs said.
