The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:

On Saturday around 2:30 a.m., Sergeant D. Newsome was patrolling the area of Chockoyotte Street when he observed a gray Nissan traveling above the posted speed limit.

Newsome caught up with the vehicle after the driver, who was later identified as a juvenile, turned onto Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

Newsome attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed and got on Interstate 95  traveling south.

Newsome initiated a vehicle pursuit in excess of 100 miles per hour.

The pursuit continued to the 171 mile marker where the driver made an abrupt exit from the interstate in an attempt to elude Newsome. The vehicle continued through the stop light at the intersection of Highway 125 and wrecked.

The driver fled the scene and Newsome detained five juvenile passengers.

Four of the six occupants were transported to ECU North for injuries. One was transferred to Greenville for a broken leg.

Lieutenant  A. Cash, corporals G. Martin, R. Marshall and canine officer Ivey of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office assisted along with Trooper R.P. Dennis of the North State Highway Patrol assisted.

Marshall deployed Ivey in an attempt to track the driver.

After a brief track, Cash observed a person running on Three Bridges Road near Carolina Rest Home Road and arrested the juvenile driver.

Dennis investigated the crash.

After being denied a secured custody order, all juveniles were turned over to their parents. Petitions are forthcoming for a charge of felony flee to elude for the driver.

Weapons seized

On Saturday around 8:15 p.m. Master Officer K. Williams initiated a traffic stop on a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado in the area of Roanoke Avenue and West Thirteenth Street for suspicion of driving while impaired.

Both occupants were observed with open containers of alcohol in their possession and the driver displayed signs of impairment.

Lopez also possessed 4 grams of cocaine.

He was arrested for open container, carrying a concealed gun, possession of cocaine, and an outstanding order for arrest from Robeson County.

The driver, Javier Alverado, 41, also from Lumberton, was placed under arrest for DWI, carrying a concealed gun — a pistol grip shotgun found under the driver's seat — possession of .7 grams of cocaine, open container, driving while license revoked, and an outstanding order for arrest from Robeson County.

Both men have November 3 court dates.
