A house in Weldon’s 400 block of Cedar Street sustained heavy damage Sunday night, according to the town’s fire department.

Chief Michael Sumner said while the house is still standing, it will likely be a structural loss. He said residents were able to retrieve valuable belongings. Two residents were displaced. There were no injuries.

The fire department received the call of an electrical box fire at approximately 9 p.m. and were dispatched to 414 Cedar Street.

Responding firefighters saw no visible smoke or flames from the exterior. Upon further investigation an electrical panel was found on fire in the rear with extension into multiple void and attic spaces in the two-story home.

Additional firefighters were requested and Halifax, Rheasville and Roanoke Rapids responded, remaining at the scene to “work diligently for five hours to extinguish the fire and all hotspots,” Sumner said.

“Due to construction type, the fire was able to quickly spread to the attic and floor areas,” the fire chief said. “Through hard work and cooperation we were able to extinguish the flames and save most of the main floor. I'd like to thank our firefighters and surrounding departments for their hard work at this fire.”

Twenty firefighters were at the scene.
