Velmarie “Sister” Green Nowell, 93 passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Vidant North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.

She was born in Weldon on June 13, 1927 to the late Charlie B. and Nora Harp Green. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Nowell; her daughter Patricia Etheridge and her son-in-law Wayne Etheridge; one grandchild, Jay Nowell; her sister, Kathleen Powell and her nephews, Arnold Powell and Ronald Powell. 

Velmarie “Sister” worked at Ham’s and then at Sister’s Snackbar. She was a longtime member of Victory Baptist Church. “Sister” loved The Lord and read her bible every day. 

She is survived by her son, Ernest Nowell and his wife Evelyn of Taylors, SC; her grandchildren, Terri Nowell, Mark Nowell and his wife Lisa, Tim Etheridge and his wife, Peggy, Brad Etheridge and his wife Paula and Jodie Nowell; her great grandchildren, Kara Sarasty and her husband, Johnathan, Lee Nowell and his wife Allison, Brittney Atkinson and her husband, Blake, Brennan Schyner, Dakota Ethridge, Kimberly Etheridge, Madison Etheridge and Tyler Etheridge; her great-great grandchildren, Roman Sarasty, Natalie Sarasty, Brody Etheridge, Emma Nowell, and Baby Girl Nowell on the way and also her Best Friends, Betty Spragins and Avalene Cullom.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Victory Baptist Church at 2pm with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating. 

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 7pm until 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.
