Clarence Howard Merritt 84 of Roanoke Rapids passed away at his home June 24, 2026. 

He was born in Halifax County on March 19, 1942, to the late William Cleveland Merritt and Lacie Mcklinney Merritt. He is also preceded in death by his son James Howard “Jamie” Merritt, his brothers Gordon Lee Merritt and William “Bill” Cleveland Merritt.

After graduating high school, Mr. Merritt joined and served proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He married the love of his life Joann Shearin and they were owners and operators of Indoor Flea Market of Roanoke Rapids for 16 years. He also loved his boat as he went out fishing. 

Mr. Merritt was a member of Tabor Methodist Church. Most of all he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and his great grandchildren.

 Married since February 11, 1968, he is survived by his wife Joann, his daughter-in-law Andrea Williams, his grandchildren Ashley Storey, Allison Storey, Taylor Storey, Logan Storey, and Ayden Turner, great grandchildren Chloee Thomas, Nathan Sherrod, and one on the way.

Funeral Services will be held at Tabor Methodist Church on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 11:00AM with Pastor Nancy Palmer officiating. 

The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00AM.
