John Kemp Outland, 49, of Roanoke Rapids died June 11, 2020 at Duke Raleigh Hospital.

John was born in Roanoke Rapids on July 20, 1970, the daughter of Wayne Lewis Outland and Junie Kay Taylor Outland.

He was formerly employed in the shipping department with Champion.  John learned from his grandfather how to play both golf and pool, two things he thoroughly enjoyed.  He was an avid sports fan and had fun regardless of whatever he did. John loved his family; he also enjoyed cooking and the beach.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Kay and George Hargrave of Roanoke Rapids; father, Wayne Outland of Richmond; brother, Glenn Outland (Birdie) of Southport; sister, Judy Pennington (Wallace) of Franklinton; half-brothers, James Outland (Amber Staniszewski) and Andrew Outland of Richmond; step-brothers, Chris Hargrave and Brian Hargrave (Marcianne) of Roanoke Rapids; his best friend, Lisa Lynch of Roanoke Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.  

John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Floyd Kemp Taylor and Ruby Taylor; John and Florentine Outland; and an uncle, James Outland. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:45 am Monday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service, with the funeral to follow at 11:00 am in the funeral home chapel.  Dr. Layne Wallace and Rev. Leo Bennett will preside.  

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  Those in attendance are asked to observe social distancing regulations.
