Gladys Balding Wilson, 99, passed away at her home in Weldon on Wednesday, December 1, 2021.

Gladys was born in Meadow Fork, NC (Madison County), a small community in her beloved mountains, the second child of Chauncey William and Evelyn Rainey Balding.  

She was a graduate of Mars Hill University and Carson Newman University with a degree in Education.  

She began her career in Meadow Fork and continued when she married and moved to Halifax County, teaching at Aurelian Springs, William R. Davie, Woodland Olney and Squire Elementary in Gaston.  She loved her students and maintained a relationship with many of them through the years.

She was a charter member of Chockoyotte Baptist Church where she taught Adult Sunday School beyond her 96th birthday.  

She was a mentor, encourager, and example to many in their walk with Christ.  She truly had a servant’s heart 

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. (Slim) Wilson, a son-in-law, Henry Taylor as well as her sister, Hazel Suttles and brothers, Clayton and Dale Balding. 

She is survived by her four daughters, Brenda Killough (Dennis) of Marion, Nancy Stephenson (Bill) of Garysburg, Joy Ellis (Steve) of Roanoke Rapids, and Kay Tripp (David) of Weldon, three sisters, Mabel Wilson of Littleton, Cleo Lane of Winston Salem, and Nina Ledford of Mars Hill, six grandchildren, Shannon Williams (Bryan), Hunter Taylor (Stephanie), Scott Killough (Jennifer), Jeremy Ellis (Terry), Britt Ellis, and Jordan Tripp, six great-grandchildren, special friends, Jeff, Paula and Ashby Burton, and caregivers, Angie Norman, Gloria Evans, and Clara Harvey.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral Home on Friday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and other times at her home. Services will be held at Hockaday Chapel on Saturday, December 4th at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Crestview Cemetery.
