Dorothy Mountford Smith, 91, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Friday, February 4, 2022, at Vidant North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.

Dorothy was born in Halifax County to the late Rufus T. Mountford and Ione Sledge Mountford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Smith; her sister, Mariam York; her brothers, Tucker Mountford and Buckeye Mountford.

Dorothy graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School, she had a great love for her family, home and community. Dorothy was a former Miss Roanoke Rapids 1951. Dorothy loved the Outer Banks, she spent many happy sun filled days on the beach. The NC Outer Banks was Mom’s “special place” … she enjoyed swimming, surf fishing, crabbing and preparing seafood meals. She and dad also enjoyed adventure rides up and down the beach on the old Willys jeep. Mom’s happiest memories. Dorothy loved appreciated and supported the Public Broadcast System (PBS) and spent many hours traveling with the “Explorer Series.” She was very fond of Master Gardner P. Allen Smith and famed PBS Italian Chef “Lidia.” Dorothy was manager of the North Carolina Welcome Center for many years and retired from the state of NC. She enjoyed meeting people from all over who were traveling I-95.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Tommy Smith, Jr. of Nags Head, Gloria Smith of Asheville and Lisa Braswell of Manteo; her brother, Frankie Mountford of Weldon.
