Richard Gary Ernst, 69, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023, at his home.

Richard was born January 3, 1954 in Sandusky, MI to Frank Peter Ernst and Virginia Morden Ernst.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Peter Ernst; his son, Frank Ernst and his brother, Jim Ernst.

Richard was known as a father, husband, son and friend.

He spent his early adulthood as a soldier where he met his wife and had two boys.

As a soldier he took his family to see the world. No matter the destination he radiated kindness and friendship.

After nineteen years of military service, he had to end his service early due to medical complications. Even though some of his physical abilities began to wane, his love and supportiveness for others remained strong.

After the military, Richard still traveled to see friends and family. He never hesitated to help others, especially family. The woods and lakes will never be the same without Richard who was known as hunter and fisherman.

However, his grandchildren will miss kind and comforting words, smiles and warm hugs. Together we will all hope that he will watch us with a proud smile.

Richard is survived by his wife Vicenta Ernst; his mother, Virginia Ernst; his son, Jeffery Ernst; his daughter-in-law, Jessica Ernst; his grandchildren, Ethan, Ava and Alicia; his brothers, Glenn Ernst, Dale Ernst and Frank Ernst and his wife Lori; his sisters, Jeanne Greene and Carol Ernst.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 30, 2023, in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Father Marlon Mendieta officiating.

Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:45 A.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.
