Lawrence “Larry” A. Denton, 77, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2023, ECU North Medical Center.

Larry was born November 22, 1946, in Halifax County to the late Lawrence Augustus Denton and Gaynelle Estherbrook Green Denton.

Larry graduated from RRHS in 1965 and earned his degree in Accounting from Hardbarger’s School of Business. 

Larry was devoted to friends and family. He was a big man covered with a rough exterior. Underneath that rough exterior was a generous heart and an ever present sense of humor. Larry was a longtime member of Bear Swamp Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer for many years and shared his musical talent as a saxophonist during worship services. 

Larry also loved classical music. 

He was a railroad enthusiast who enjoyed rail fanning and was a model railroader. 

Larry served on the Board of Directors and as treasurer for Seaboard Coastline Seaboard Airline Atlantic Coastline Historical Society. 

Larry was an Accountant, tax preparer and office manager, a skilled carpenter and was employed by A.D. Haverstock, Weldon Veneer and for a period of time a self-employed contractor. 

Larry also was an official with the NC Athletic Association where he officiated for 25+ years for basketball, football and baseball. In later years, he looked forward to passing time on a daily basis with his retired friends at the gathering place known affectionately as “The Corner.”

Larry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Martha Brewer Denton; his cousins, Sue Tidrick and Betty Jean Rudd.

A reception will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 2 at Bear Swamp Baptist Church in the fellowship Hall with a celebration of Larry’s life service following in the sanctuary with Rev. Charles Wilson officiating.

In lieu of flowers consider a memorial donation to Bear Swamp Baptist Church, Baptist Children’s Homes of NC, Woofs and Purrs Animal Rescue or a charity of your choice.
