Burial rites for Ruth Marie (Ruthie) Cayer Gregory will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC, followed by a reception in the parish house. Her interment will follow at Saint Mark's Episcopal Cemetery in Halifax, NC.

Ruthie, 88 years of age, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2024.

She was born April 12, 1935, to the late Louis Alfred Cayer, Jr. and the late Ruth Marie (Bordelon) Cayer in Long Bridge, LA.

Ruthie had many hobbies and enjoyed many things, including gardening, cooking nutritious meals, flower arranging, tennis, water aerobics, baking yummy desserts, book clubs, and serving on the Roanoke Rapids Beautification Committee. She was also an active investor, with CNBC often playing in the background.

Ruthie was a devoted and very active member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

Her passion was caring for the grounds; she spent untold hours in the Dunn Garden and the churchyard as a labor of love to make an inviting, loving space for people to find peace.

She also served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Beautification committee, chairperson of the Little School, President of ECW, Saints Cuisine, and enjoyed providing delicious meals at various receptions.

After graduating from Marksville High School in Louisiana, she attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, completing her Home Economics degree, and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.

She began her career as a Dietician at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA (associated with Tulane University).

That is where she met her husband, Miles Gregory. Ruthie and Miles wed in Louisiana and, in 1963, moved to his native Halifax County, NC.

She was a Tarheel fan through marriage, yet always cheered on her beloved LSU Tigers.

She raised their four children and fully embraced North Carolina. From PTA president and room mother to Girl Scout leader, Ruthie enjoyed being involved in her children's lives.

Those left to cherish her forever smiling memory include her three surviving children: son Miles Cunningham Gregory, Jr of West Palm Beach, FL; Haynes Gregory of Cottonport, LA, and his sons Edwin Haynes II and Miles; Ruthie Bury of Austin, TX and her husband Kevin and their sons Andrew and Bennett, and daughter Audrey.

She is preceded in death by her dear, sweet daughter, Georgie Joffrion Gregory.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Georgie Alice (Jokie) Taylor, and her brother, Louis Alfred Cayer III.

Memorials in Mrs. Gregory's name can be made to the St. Mark's Episcopal Cemetery in Halifax, care of Charles Tillery, P.O. Box 145 Tillery, NC 27887
