HCC sets food tasting; heroes nomination deadline

Halifax Community College is preparing for two events — The ninth annual International Day & Food Tasting and the ninth annual Saluting Our African-American Heroes celebration.

Food tasting

International Day will be held Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. at The Centre.

Foods from around the world and various cultures will be featured. International attire will also be worn.

The event will include presentations by HCC students and the food tasting.

Admission is $2 per plate for the food tasting portion of the program. Featured foods will include banana pudding, zucchini bread, soul food, empanadas, chicken salad, barbecue, navy beans, chicken afritada, pork adobo, jerk and curry chicken, a variety of pizzas, chicken tagine and buttery couscous, collards, hushpuppies, Danish kringles, sweet potato jacks, baked ziti and more. Saluting Our African-American Heroes

Nominations are currently being accepted for this year's hero event, which was started nine years ago by college President Ervin V. Griffin Sr.

The nomination deadline is set for February 5 at 5 p.m. by mail or online submission.

The nomination includes completion of a short form and submission of a brief essay detailing qualities in identified areas. The essay will address each of four qualities listed below that are used as the selection criteria.

The narrative should expand and focus on specific examples that demonstrate the nominee’s commitment and unique contributions to the Roanoke Valley.

Any citizen of the African-American community is eligible to be considered for this nomination. Individuals may be nominated by peers or family members only and individuals may not nominate themselves. The narrative should describe the nominee’s qualities in the following areas:

Commitment and contributions to the community

Unselfish devotion to others

Initiative, innovation and leadership in the region

Willingness to share time and wisdom through service to the community and its citizens

The recognition will be held on February 18 at 11 a.m. in The Centre.
