Garysburg police Wednesday made an arrest in a nearly four-year-old second-degree rape case.

Chief Melvin Garner said this afternoon the department has been working on the case since it was reported on March 21, 2012. “We just got the main evidence within the last month.”

While he declined to elaborate on what the evidence was, he said it was what was needed to file the charges against Larry Mychal Chambliss, 26, of Jackson.

Chambliss, who has been entered as wanted person since January 26, was arrested soon after a Northampton County Sheriff's Office deputy gave the police department a tip he was scheduled to be at the courthouse in Jackson Wednesday for a child custody hearing.

After verifying Chambliss was at his scheduled appointment, he was taken into custody by Deputy David Shepard at the conclusion of that meeting. He was then turned over to Garysburg police for processing.

Garysburg charged him with second-degree rape; second-degree kidnapping and breaking and entering. He was jailed on $135,000 bond. He had an initial court appearance today but as of this report has not been assigned his next court date.

Garner said Chambliss was familiar with the adult victim in the case.
