Halifax Community College will be one of several sites across the state Monday to hold public input meetings called for by Republican leaders after federal judges ruled the First and Twelfth Congressional districts are unconstitutional.

The First Congressional District is represented by Congressman G.K. Butterfield.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in the Dr. Phillip W. Taylor Complex Room 108 on the HCC campus.

“The residents of our area will have the opportunity to participate and provide input into this important issue,” HCC President Ervin Griffin Sr. said in correspondence sent late Saturday night. “I was contacted about hosting the hearings late Friday night and we have worked out all the details for the residents of our area to provide input.”

If the campus is closed due to inclement weather, the hearing will be canceled at that location and participants may submit their comments in writing.

The three federal judges ruled earlier this month state lawmakers must redraw the maps without regard to race, which they believed state lawmakers previously relied upon when drawing the lines.
