A post on the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page says Michael Gene Cherry was taken into custody shortly before 8 this morning in the Branchville area off Highway 186.
Trooper J.D. Warren Jr. of the state Highway Patrol said he tried to stop Cherry for a registration violation late Tuesday afternoon.
The pursuit started on Interstate 95 and went through Northampton County.
The chase proceeded onto Highway 186. Warren said Cherry’s car became disabled about a mile across the Virginia line.
Warren charged Cherry with felony flee to elude arrest; speeding 120 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone; reckless driving; improper passing, expired registration and expired inspection.
Meanwhile, the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office posted it received a report Warren was in pursuit of the vehicle shortly before 4:15 p.m.
Warren stopped his pursuit at the state line but Southampton deputies were in the area when dispatch received a call the vehicle stopped and an occupant was walking north on the highway. A woman was found and cooperated with deputies, telling them Cherry fled into the woods.
Deputies learned the man was wanted in North Carolina for two counts of assault and a federal probation violation.
Cherry is believed to allegedly be a suspect in several burglaries in the Lake Gaston area.
Warren said investigators are still trying to determine where on the lake the crimes occurred.
A manhunt which went through the night and included the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office concluded with a successful canine track by Southampton authorities.
Cherry was jailed without opportunity for bond in Southampton County.

Southampton noted the following items were found in the vehicle and are believed to be stolen:

Five watches
Two boxes of miscellaneous jewelry
PlayStation 2 with two memory cards and three controllers
Pioneer stereo with cassette player
Durban compact disc player with two speakers
Toby compact disc player with two speakers
Magnavox DVD player
Two DirecTV boxes with two remotes

Meanwhile, federal court records show Cherry was sentenced in November of 2012 to a 63-month sentence for possessing a weapon as a felon.
He also received three years of supervised release.
His indictment noted he had at least three prior felony convictions, all for being violent felonies.
