A 52-year-old man was charged with allegedly trying to steal scrap metal from a Weldon out building and his 15-year-old son was charged with conspiracy, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office reported this afternoon.

Concerned citizens called the sheriff's office as John Issac Smith reportedly was in possession of scrap metal from the shed, Lieutenant Joseph Sealey said.

The man's 15-year-old son waited in a vehicle.

Deputies E. Johnson and L. Ruffin responded and located Smith, of Weldon, on the property, allegedly in possession of various scrap items from the shed.

Smith reportedly ran from the deputies but was apprehended at the vehicle where his child waited.

The deputies charged Smith with breaking and entering, attempted larceny, possession of stolen goods and felony conspiracy.

Smith was given a $2,500 bond and is awaiting an October 2 court date.
