The Halifax County Law Enforcement Officers Association and their friends in Northampton County helped two officers with overwhelming medical expenses today.

The help came through a barbecue sandwich sale to help cover expenses for Sergeant James Rawls of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office and detention officer Harold Burgess.

The help came from a crosssection of judicial officials and law enforcement employees from both counties, said Chief Deputy Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

“We're members of a big family,” said Denise Cherry of Judge Alma Hinton's office. “We see these people more than our own families sometimes.”

Those helping out in the effort today, said Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp, took vacation days to come to ProBuild on Tenth Street to wrap sandwiches and get them bagged with fixings and drinks.

Rawls is recovering from a stroke and is expected to return to work while Burgess suffered issues regarding sugar. “It's al about volunteering their time to help fellow officers,” he said.

Sales totals were not immediately available but Tripp estimated more than 100 people came through the lot to pick up sandwiches. “It went very well.”
