The saturation patrols that begin Sunday and end the following Saturday are part of the Governor's Highway Safety Program's effort to reduce child fatalities, Chief Mark Macon said.
Officers will be enforcing the state's child restraint laws during this campaign and on September 19 and 20 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the police department will be assisting the public with proper child car seat installation.
“We're hoping we can help save lives and help educate the public,” Macon said.
Macon said he remembers seeing several years ago a fatality involving a child who was ejected from a minivan. “The child apparently was not wearing a seatbelt or in a child restraint system. I've seen parents have one in a restraint system and one who was not. They're gambling on which child would survive.”
