A new city council member was sworn in and an old one was bid farewell this evening.

Doughtie is sworn in.

In between, Mayor Emery Doughtie and Councilwoman Suetta Scarbrough, who ran unopposed were also sworn by Halifax County Superior Court Judge Alma Hinton.

Scarbrough is sworn in as her son Mark holds a family Bible.

Wayne Smith took his seat as the newly elected member of council after Greg Lawson chose not to run.

Doughtie and Lawson shake hands.

“I appreciated the warmness,” Lawson said after Doughtie presented him a plaque. “It was a pleasure serving council. I'm glad my buddy Wayne Smith will be sitting up here.”

Lawson also praised City Manager Joseph Scherer. “I think we accomplished a lot. We got a new city manager to give us more stability. I'm pleased you are on board.”

In another matter this evening Carl Ferebee was re-elected as mayor pro-tem. “Thank you for your vote of confidence,” he told council.
