Roanoke Rapids will usher in the Christmas season beginning Thursday night with a tree-lighting ceremony at the Lloyd Andrews Building and Veterans Park.

The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Lloyd Andrews building where light refreshments will be served.

The tree-lighting ceremony will be held in Veterans Park and will feature Christmas carols by the Roanoke Rapids High School Chorus.

Meanwhile, Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon told council this evening the annual Christmas parade is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. on Roanoke Avenue.

“We're very excited that the grand marshall will be Will Hawkins,” he said, also noting appreciation for Citizens Community Bank being the primary sponsor.

There will be 82 entries, including floats, seven fire units and two EMS units. Roanoke Rapids High School, Weldon High and Chaloner Middle School bands will perform, he said. Four Shrine units will also perform.

The parade will be held rain or shine.

Prizes will be given for best overall floats, best church float, best fire or rescue unit, best band and best vehicle.
