Monday was apparently a day for brazen acts of crime in Roanoke Rapids, as police reported a 69-year-old woman was robbed of a cell phone in her pocket and another thief helped himself to a pocketbook as the victim stopped to tend to her infant child.

The crimes occurred in the span of roughly an hour and a half and involved different suspects.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Officer Jesse Salmon responded to 1019 East 10th Street where the victim stated an unknown black female came into her business, and looked around for 15 minutes before beginning to demand money.

The suspect then went forcefully over to the victim, sticking her hands in the victim's pockets and stole her cell phone.

The suspect is believed to be in her late 20s or 30s and wore a hat, scarf and black coat. She got into a burgundy minivan with some type of yellow vanity tag on the front.

The victim was not injured.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., police said a 26-year-old victim pulled her car to curb in the 1000 block of Rapids Street to take care of her infant son when she was approached by a tall, black male who opened the door to her truck, and stole her purse. The purse contained an undisclosed amount of cash and important documents.

Captain Andy Jackson said the theft happened so fast the victim was unable to offer further description.
