A space heater placed too close to a mattress is believed to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a mobile home in the Gaston area this morning.

Gaston and Garysburg fire units responded to the blaze around 7 a.m. on Fern Lane, just off Highway 46 West, Gaston Chief Ed Porter Jr. said.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the male resident outside and unharmed.

The man stated that after exiting the shower, he found his mattress on fire and the room in flames. He stated that after safely exiting the home, flames breached through the outside windows.

Firefighters found the home engulfed, pulled hose lines and quickly extinguished the blaze within a 10 minute period.

Paramedics from Northampton County EMS provided medical rehab. Fire crews remained on scene for 2 ½ hours.

Porter said the mattress was in the living room with the heater next to it. Three feet of space is needed when operating these heaters, the chief said.

The mobile home was a total loss. The American Red Cross will assist with the home loss.
